Our Votes Are Not for Sale
I am deeply frustrated by President Trump’s promise to give every adult American a $5,000 ‘Trump Dividend’ if Republicans retain control of Congress during the midterm elections.
Although this is a political promise—not a confirmed payment—the message sounds dangerously close to telling Americans: vote Republican and receive money. Trump cannot simply issue these checks on his own. A program potentially costing more than $1 trillion would require congressional approval, and he has not provided a detailed or credible plan explaining how it would be funded.
Americans are struggling with food, rent, healthcare, medication, transportation, and other necessities. Using that financial hardship as leverage during an election is insulting. People deserve lasting policies that improve their lives—not a conditional check dangled in front of them when a political party needs their votes.
If the government has enough money to promise every adult $5,000, why must people wait until after an election? Why should assistance depend on which party controls Congress? Relief should be based on human need, not political loyalty.
Our democracy should be built on informed choices, accountable leadership, and policies that serve the public. A ballot is not a lottery ticket, and the presidency is not a promotional giveaway.
My vote cannot be bought. Neither can my voice.
